What size of bit do you use on your draft?

I know this is a fairly broad question, but I just want a basic idea. Romeo is getting very close to the stage where I can put a bridle on him(), but my two mares are small, Pretzl takes a 4.5". Pickles a 4.75". Needless to say, a 1600-1800# clydesdale will need a bigger bit. I was thinking 5.5", but I would love some info from those who ride their drafts. Thanks.

I used to ride one of my friends horses when I was 13, my friend told me all the great capabilities they do and I think that she said that she used 5.5" and 6" sized of bit.

Most start at 6" but measure him just like you do the little horses. Unfortunately at 6" and larger, the bit selection is dismal unless you go the custom route.

Why would you try to guess instead of measuring him?

Sam is currently in a 5.5" but I think we're going to be moving to either 5.75" or a 6" soon, as he is growing quickly. He's 2 years old... We also use a straight rubber loose ring... I recommend trying Romeo with a loose ring before trying anything else, where he trusts you and is receptive to you, if you start him fresh with something gentle and mild, you should be ok.

6" Myler comfort snaffle. Was a little big last year but fits perfect now.

Ahab, my Percheron takes a 6.5" No matter how much I don't believe it, that's what he takes. He came with a piece of crap Tom Thumb that went into the dustbin"; a Liverpool for driving that was fitted by a driving instructor; a single joint snaffle driving bit, and the one I use to ride, a loose ring double jointed snaffle that came from Dover tack. Dover had a few bits that big. Myler will custom make a bit at 6.5" for about $130.00, but I haven't gone that route yet.
