Your favorite brand of western saddle for the big guys?

I am in the process of selling my Blue Ridge barrel saddle, it measures out to 7 3/4" gullet which I was almost certain was going to fit Jagger the Clydesdale. When you sit it on him it just barely fits(he is still gaining weight), and when you cinch him up and sit in the saddle it presses into him-- too narrow and the bars are just wrong. (I almost feel as though the gullet should be wider, and the bars a little steeper so they don't push into him? I am still trying to understand the whole gullet vs. bars..)

Anyway, I am looking for a used saddle.. something affordable. I have been eyeing up Big Horn and Abetta draft saddles. I have not heard much on the Big Horns but have heard the Abettas are very wide.

Thoughts and opinions? Any brands that you like?

If the saddle is sitting on his withers, than it's too wide. Clydes have more predominant withers than other draft breeds and can typically get by with FQH bars. I bought a wade off of CL for $400 and it fit all buy my most muttoned withered mare.

As far as which to buy, you get what you paid for. I have never sat in a Big Horn so I can't comment on them. I have no use for synthetic saddles so I guess I can't really help you there. The seat on draft saddles is wonky IMO. I don't know why it is so padded and shallow. It looks like it will move your center of gravity forward. It's like everything that works on a light horse saddle goes out the window when they supersize it.

My girl isn't as big as a Clyde but she's 1/2 Breton draft and needs FQHB and wide gullet. I found the Lady Fabtron Trail saddle which fits her great and is fun to ride in, plus it's not too heavy. It works for men too, so don't let the "lady" part fool ya. :)

I use a Black Rhino on my Percheron, but even used they aren't cheap. It was built for an Arabian and fits him well; way better than the draft size saddle that came with him.

I have a synthetic that sort of fits one of the draft mixes, she is so round, everything kinda rolls off of her. I use and old roping saddle on the other one, and the tag with the name is gone now.

My friend rides her 16.2 hh hitch horse built Belgian in a Dakota saddle. It's FQHBs with quite a bit of flare to the shoulders.

I wound up getting a custom saddle for my Belgian. Works great for both of us. It is a Synergist. They aren't cheap but aren't really expensive for what you get. It is a family run company and they are really nice people to deal with. I have 3 of their saddles and a couple of friends also have them.
