Smile Bending exercises for a small school!

My pony is very supple on his left rein but really struggles doing things like circles etc on his left rein!

We have been doing bending exercises on the ground to get him stretching but I need some new things that can be done whilst riding in our school which is pretty small!

Any suggestions, diagrams, websites that would help would be excellent!!

I think you meant to say right rein for one of those? Horses usually have a stronger/ better side, just as we do.

Why not just keep it simple to start. Work on bending him to the inside a few strides, straightening him on the rein, then a counter bend off your outside leg for a few strides. Depending on his physical abilities right now this can be done at all three gaits.

Small bending circles at the walk really helped my boy when he was stuck in the left side of his neck. We'd do a few in one direction, then change and circle the other way, always focusing on him bending around your seat and leg throughout the whole body, not just the neck.

Good luck and stick with it! It may take your pony some time to develop that flexibility.

What do you consider bending exercises on the ground?

Is the horse up/open/chewing first? Can it do lateral flexions in mm? Can it chew the reins from the hand? THEN you can do shoulder fore/shoulder in/counter shoulder in.

Figures can be done in any number of layouts in which the rider first changes (lateral) flexion at the atlas/axis and then bend. Circles/half circles/half circles in reverse/serpentines/broken lines...and within them eventually si/counter si/travers/renvers/etc
