Is there a cost to becoming a cadet in the Spanish Riding School of Vienna? If so what? I'm just curious I tried googling and looking a their website but found nothing
Unless things have changed, you must be a resident of the European Union to get into the Spanish Riding School program. Some members of the Spanish Riding School teach lessons at other facilities, however.
You have to be fluent in German, an EU resident and have a specific body type (short torso and long legs).
Some crazy number of cadets drop out after their first 1-2 years as far as I know. Like 80% of them... Don't hold that percentage to me, but its something along the lines of that.
A woman from the US was the first female to be accepted into the Spanish Riding School in 2008 but she did have dual citizenship - without EU citizenship it seems unlikely that you could get in
Even if you can’t get in, you can still study with them if you can come up with the funds to do so. They do teach dressage, horsemanship, and carriage driving workshops to outside students. Considering the knowledge they have accumulated over the past 400+ years, and the fact that you are learning from people who have literally devoted their entire lives to horses, horsemanship, and teaching, it’d be a small price to pay! Their week-long “Bronze” level carriage-driving course is 700 Euros, which is about $767 dollars American – that’s REALLY good for a full week of immersive teaching. Of course there are other expenses such as airfare, food and lodging to get there, but to me it would be worth it.
I am an EU citizen, that is not a problem, and I happen to be exactly the body type they want. I've also taken a year of Germany and I can learn more. Trust me I've done my research on the how, I just don't know how much it costs, it doesn't seem to say anywhere
You also have to audition - the desire to attend is all very well but the quality of your current riding level is taken into consideration too - you also have to work darn hard and may spend the first six months of your time there riding on the lunge.
One of my coaches - Robert Hall was a student and riding master there many decades ago - he now resides in USA and I believe is still teaching.
In the meantime buy the Complete Training of Horse and Rider by Alois Podhajsky and study it from cover to cover. He was a Director of the Spanish Riding SChool for 25 years.
As far as I know, you don't pay anything other than your living expenses if you get chosen as an Eleve.
I think it is considered an apprenticeship and it is not common to pay for those in Germany and Austria.
The hard part would be getting selected.
The Spanish Riding School does however teach outside students in their Trainingszentrum Heldenberg. They offer workshops and single lessons. I believe 45 min of private lesson runs at ~€250. Posted via Mobile Device
Since they lost government funding they've had to make money so public lessons are now available.
