Can we do dressage?

Hello dressage experts! I just purchased a soon-to-be 14 yr old QH. She is trained in HUS and western. I can get her to do a nice, fast trot but her canter is a VERY slow lope I am a pretty green rider who will be soon working with a dressage instructor and I am very excited to start our new training! Anyone have experience/stories about teaching their "slow going" QH's to learn dressage?

I wish I had a quarter horse - my warmblood's strides are so darn big I can barely stay on him....

half the horses at my barn are quarter horses and they do great in dressage. as stated, I don't personally own one, but I remembered seeing a series of articles by Lynn Palmer in Dressage Today about doing dressage with QH's. I thought it may be of interest to you if you could find them on line.

Good luck!

Absolutely she can do dressage. She will have to learn to accept contact and you will have to teach her to go "forward!". It's all in the training and time in the saddle. You can eventually retrain her.

The best part is that you have an instructor to help you.

Read about "Rugged Lark," QH.
Rugged Lark – America’s Horse Daily
I'm planning on Dressaging my (non-registered) QH, "Buster" bc I've watched his suspension at the trot and he's very balanced. DESPITE this, any horse benefits from Dressage training. I don't ever plan to step into the Dressage show ring with him..well, if he gets REALLY good,...we'll see

I had total greenie qh with long body and short legs, started lessons with dressage trainer 1.5 years ago, and we competed last year. Of course it's doable with the good trainer!

One of the lesson horses my trainer uses is a QH and he is one of my favorites.
