Dressage Freestyle + Copyright?

Hiya Guys & Dolls... another dressage question regarding freestyles.

I'm debating putting one together for this summer. I'm new at the process, and everything/everyone is telling me to get someone to put together the kur for me.

That being said, are there copyright issues with putting together your own kur that paying someone else to do it for you would include? If I paid for the songs on iTunes, does that technically give me the right to use those songs for "personal use"? And would a freestyle at a national dressage show count as personal use?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have every single piece of software I could ever need for editing, and I'm sure with enough patience I could put something together suitable that would be decent enough to compete with, without spending $700 on one CD.

Thoughts? Advice? Anebel - I know you do the freestyle thing, opinions on this post?

Lol, yes I do do the "freestyle thing" :P However I have Karen Robinson of Applause Dressage put my freestyles together. She is excellent at working long distance and has always delivered amazing freestyles and choreography. If you are looking to get someone to do your freestyle for you over long distance, now is the time to start!! It takes a lot of time!
Now if you are doing it on your own, I am 99.9% sure that using music for a freestyle falls under "personal use", so as long as you have paid for the music you are golden!
It really helps to watch a video with sound of you riding to different pieces of music to decide what really LOOKS great (I find non-horsey people help A LOT with this too). And for the choreography try to keep it simple and show off your horse's strengths. Try not to add in non-compulsory movements unless your horse is VERY good at them and it helps the test flow (Like in my third level freestyle I did a simple change through walk between my counter canters because he is SO GOOD at them, and a flying change would have been too difficult). And keep in mind the forbidden movements - anything that can be perceived as forbidden may get you docked points!

Good luck!

Awesome! Question - when you get Karen to do your stuff, does she do the choreography and just give you a finished product for the level you're working on? Also, you have a Youtube vid somewhere of your latest freestyle right? If so, can you post the link so I can take another look?

Yes, Karen does everything and even makes a "test" for you to memorize of your choreography (I find this super useful because I have a hard time listening to the music and riding at the same time).
Her rates are different depending on what level you are doing, and I'm fairly sure if you have a freestyle you like and just want to bump it up a level she would only charge the difference.
Karen's website:

And my third level freestyle, this test scored over 70%.

So from the USDF itself:

• According to Section 115 of the Copyright Act, a mechanical license must be obtained for the re-recording of
music in any format. For information on obtaining a mechanical license, it is recommended that the rider
contact the National Music Publisher’s Association at NMPA.

Has anyone actually done this? Ugh....
