what kind of stuff did she have you work on? and did your horse know any of this stuff before?
I got a quarterhorse draft cross last summer and I'd like to work on dressage with her and am curious about where to start her.
sounds like you had fun. =) post about your next lesson.
Thanks, it was fun! Will-do. :) On my part, a lot of the lesson was posturing, providing correct contact on the bit and correcting old habits (like leaning into turns, crossing over with my rein, etc), and stops/changes in gait without using the reins. For Jax, it was learning how to bend properly into turns and learning how I ask for that. Very basic stuff, but it lead to lots of "aha!" moments for us both.
When I was preparing for the lesson over the past few days, we did lots of transitions, changes in speed, etc. I think the preparation made our lesson more productive.
And no, Jax has never done dressage before-- like I mentioned, he's only done western pleasure and a little bit of hunter pleasure and sidesaddle, so we've worked a lot on swinging forward movement. He does pretty well with leg yields, yielding the fore and yielding the hind, which I taught him partly for fun and partly to make life easier.
