Thought i'd post this all for everyone to see. This weekend the queen of freestyles got beat by Edward Gal and Totilas with an 86.70%. Some argued that this music overpowered the horse, but the judges obviously thought it suited him greatly.
Regarding the freestyle: I concur - the highest point on the neck is not the poll - behind the vertical a lot. Was rider using too much curb or was that rollkur garbage used? :-| The horse is a beautiful mover though!
Regarding, Anky - sounds like there is just a lot of old-fashioned jealousy with everyone. I was not impressed with her version of reining, but I am sure it helped her skills to ride a different discipline. I also do not like her training techniques, BUT maybe this reining experience will help her see a new light (and she will stop with the draw reins and rollkur??) One can only hope.
I'm glad someone beat Anky. Truthfully, I despise her. I don't respect her at all and I'm glad someone showed her she's not the be all end all of dressage.
Have you seen how horrible of a reining rider she is?
Check it out on 2:22 when she SMASHES the horses mouth with the bit (he opens his mouth, I don't think I've ever seen a reining horse do that) during a sliding stop. And this was done in Vegas and she was even featured in America's HQrse Magazine, AQHA's membership magazine in an article about reining.
The worst part about it, I think, is that the HORSE knows that pattern with or without a rider and knows how to do it. Sigh.
That horse hates her guts, and looks like complete crap. I wasn't impressed by anyone there, actually, which is a crying shame that all those english riders that think western people just 'yahoo around', can't ride the world's best horses in a reining pattern! It's just circles and a straight line. I'll admit--dressage has way more 'finesse' then reining... and they all sucked at it. AND they had time to practice.
That freestyle gave me GOOSEBUMPS! Does anyone know what music was used? I heard some of the Pirates of the Caribbean score for sure. I really liked the mix of Spanish and Celtic styles. I've dreamed of my dream dressage freestyle, drawing it with a pencil as I listen to music I like, and POTC score is one of my favorites! I'm not a strict dressage rider, but I love watching freestyles and playing with my own fantasy ones, lol. Fantastic Ride.
I love to see Anky beat(Rollkur witch that she is) and I was positively sickened when I got my QH mag this month. Ugh. WHAT is she trying to do in reining? The only funny part was picturing her doing ANYTHING to the tune of 'Cotton Eyed Joe'.
I don't think that Slayer or Megadeath could even overpower that horse's trot. Good choices all around, very well executed and a fabulous horse/rider. Finally a test in the 80%s that actually deserves it. And the fashion is also excellent, I want that tailcoat!
And that is some of the most horrible reining I have ever seen.... She'll probably get the gold though At least until Edward Gal or Andreas Helgstrand take up reining too.
I think she figures "oh well i'm the 'best' at dressage, so... I must be the best at every other horse sport! Even if it is the complete opposite of what I do now!"
It's about time someone put Anky down level. I cannot stand Anky and I have no idea why she even made it as far as she did with her ethics.
I think that ride was absolutely stunning and I got a lump in my throat just watching it! What a beautiful ride, and it is about time that the Judges recognize those who ride in the same arena as Anky - because they deserve to shine for their talent and abillities.
The first video was great. I guess I shouldnt go on an anky rant since im not a dressage rider, the reining thing just irritates me...she is just so cocky about it:
Anky van Grunsven wants to participate in the 2010 World Equestrian Games for Reining. On an Olympic celebration party with her family she got a Western saddle as present and decided to take reining lessons with her friend Rieky Young. In the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Anky wrote, "I think it would be super to ride at the 2010 WEG in Kentucky both in dressage and reining." Van Grunsven lives only 10 minutes from Rieky Young's place and said that she was training there after she had finished her own riding and lessons. "I don't have my own reining horse. I'm testing a few horses at Rieky's. I first want to feel which horse fits me. The sliding and turning, which make the sport so spectacular, are easy to teach. The hard bit is the basis and that everything happens only with one hand. I notice that I think too much when I train with Rieky. The fun bit is that Rieky is not afraid to shut up. Besides Sjef, not many people dare to correct me when I'm riding a horse. Rieky is not bothered by that."
Hmmm. that's weird. I always thought most reiners didn't use the reins hardly at all.... Stacy Westfall anyone??? Anky has a LOOOONG way to go before she's in the same class reining wise with Stacy....though I would pay cash to see Anky on ANY of those horses bareback...LOL!!!!
And she automatically assumes she has WEG in the bag for 2010 for dressage. I mean, she probably does...but the fact that she is EXPECTING it... wow. just wow.
Wow...that freestyle gave me goosebumps...I'm now officially inspired to go out and train my pony, so I can do my own freestyle...Lol!
And that video of Anky...yikes...if my trainer (from when I was a kid) had seen that, she would be rolling over in her grave...that poor horse; He could probably do that pattern with light rein pressure, let alone someone yanking on his mouth, or maybe he needs a different lighter bit, because to me, it seems like at any point she put even light pressure his head came up, and the back hollowed...either way, poor horsemanship, because she failed to realize what was going on with her horse.
Anky is Dutch and an international dressage competator. She uses Rolkur, which is an extreme training technique that asks the horse to basically put its nose to its chest. It's horrible and she should be punished for using something like that but no....
here's some more info on her.... you may have to switch the language to English if I haven't already
eventerdrew - WTF? When did that happen?? Love to see a link if you can find one - I am heartbroken over that one there!!! Werth? Uff da!
I'm sorry, but - aynelson - jealousy? No. hardly. but, think what you will. Personally, I just feel that rollkur (Anky's preferred method) is NOT true dressage. Thus, it's a joke for her to be taking so many titles when up against riders that use classical dressage. And honestly, look at some reining videos from REAL reining competetors, then watch Anky's. It's a joke. Plain & simple.
I'll have to dig up the issue of America's HQrse with the Anky interview, but the short version is that she is not trying to take anything away from reining training - she says in there at one point that no trainer would dare criticize her riding, and follows up that she fully expects to be competing in reining at the international level next year, when if you just watch the way she is haulin' on that horse(and the horse is already been competing at national levels), she would not be allowed to compete at anywhere NEAR that level. That's all I'm sayin.
And for the record - that wasn't even her horse. She does not yet own a reining horse.
I have not read the article, but I am glad you paraphrased it. Wow, is she like trying to take over reining or something? I was hoping she would be more diplomatic and less self-centered about the experience. I really was hoping reining would help her see the light and stop that rollkur crap. I was thinking everyone just sounded jealous - but maybe she does need to be met with harsh, real, criticism. I am glad you enlightened me! She sort of has this reputation that paves her way in dressage, sad to see it working in other disciplines! Have you thought about writing a letter to the editor of your magazine?
