Saddle Suggestions?

I left a message to have the saddle fitter come out, my Morgan just turned 5 and all of a sudden his saddle is slipping all over the place and practically impossible to get situated right. Since it never fit me quite right to begin with, it's time to look at a replacement.

I'm using a 16.5" County Competitor with a #3 fit right now. My trainer's main complaint is that it pushes me forward so "your butt pooches out the back" and it's too big a seat size she says.

Saddle Fitter wants me to choose a few saddle brands and she'll haul them on out to try. I have no clue, my County was gifted to me and it's all I've ever ridden in other than a few of my trainer's saddles which were huge on me as hers are all 17.5" saddles.

Any suggestions? I am hoping not to spend a fortune but will not be buying *junk*. I think I can sweet talk the hubby into giving me the $2k refund check we are getting next week or at least most of it. I can put my current one up for consignment but not sure how much a 15yr old saddle is going to be worth. I'm 5'2" and 106lbs, I can't see myself in a 16" saddle, my kiddo has a 15.5" and I tried it for the heck of it, WAY too small! I am wondering if mine current one is just made big?

For 2k you'd probably be safest looking at used saddles to stay on budget and get something good quality.
I would try another county and probably look at the following makes: stubben, courbette, passier, Karl niedersuss and crosby.
Used it is easy to find these saddles for around 2k and they are all good quality makes, as you have a saddle fitter I'm sure all the saddles will be inspected for faults in the tree as all used saddles should be.
If you want to get a bit more spendy I am partial to albion and schleese as long as they are wool flocked.

Good luck!

If you have enough money I'd look into Black Country Eloquence. Its an amazing saddle for the money (and can be customized for free). I wish I could afford it when I was looking for one.

I myself have Thornhill Vienna and it's very comfortable. Thornhill Klasse was absolutely amazing and I really hoped to get it, but wasn't the best fit for my horses.

BC & Thornhill are better for the wide horses though.

Passier and Karl Niedersuss other 2 nice brands I could think of.

P.S. I really disliked Stubben, Anky, and Bates dressage saddles. My saddle fitter didn't like MT dressage saddle because of the way billets done there (although she advised MT when I was looking for jumping saddle).

I like the look of the Eloquence but I am thinking it's slightly out of my range unless I can find a good used one. My saddle fitter has a Black Country Vinici that's in my range (it's brand new basically with a used price) but it's a 17.5" and I'm afraid midgetty me would be swimming in it and I'm not sure what I think of a monoflap.

I think he's going to need a medium or medium wide tree. He was a chunky lil dude when I bought him, lost an excessive amount of weight over Winter and now that we've got him sorted out and packing the pounds back on while being exercised, my wide saddle that fit originally seems huge and he's got a complete different build.

sorry to ask this on your thread but what dressage saddles are good for more straight backed horses and how do you tell what size you need? i ride in a 16 or 16.5" jumping saddle.. is it the same for dressage?

Foxy, my jumping saddle as well as my dressage is 18. I think Stubben could be a good fit for straight back horse. BC, Thornhill, and Duett probably not (as my horses are very curved). But it all depends on saddle, model of the saddle and the back/shoulders.

BTW, I'd suggest you to start new thread so you could get more replies to your specific question.

i suggest an ambassador!!! i got one second hand from my instructor for $1000. they are english made, the have a deep seat and really comfy, they put you in a great position.
i also have a wintec isabell (bates brand but the cheaper synthetic ones) they have a deep seat and are well balanced. rather comfy too but would trade it for an ambassador :) that costed me $1000 new one sale as it was a run out model, they upgraded the model.

I've got a Klimke on trial right now. The saddle fitter said that my Morgan is going to really fill out in the next few years and she'd like to see me in something very adjustable. I am really liking it so far but only had 2 short rides.

Tried an Ainsley, boy was it uncomfy, my horse didn't seem to like it either, although the fit was good, so that one is out. Tried one of my trainer's saddles (forget the brand) and thankfully I didn't love it since she paid nearly double my budget for it used.

Exchanged the Ainsley for a Cobra, going to try it out on Tues. it's at the max end of my budget though.

I have a Karl Niedersuss for sale, a 17.5 with a MW tree, black, excellent condition.

I will allow a 7 day trial. If it does not fit, you may send it back within 7 days.

It is an Olympik...lovely saddle.

I have an ad in the tack for sale section, with a link to the ebay ad. If you click on the link, there are photos. Let me know! :) (disregard the ebay price)

What ever you do, do not get gat an isabel, worst ever for giving you chronic back pain, they tilt your hip and push your butt out.

My recomnedation- and what was used when i was on a dressage scholarship in germany, wintec, the come in a variety of styles you can change the gullet to fit your horse affordable and durable, and easy care. I use them for competition to. They r not just training sadle

wintec pro dressgae or the new 1 with contour blocs are both really good
