working student ?'s

Ok, I had my first lesson with my new dressage trainer today! It went great, so great that she offered me a positon as a working student. I would live in a furnished basement apartment, I would feed and ride 6 days a week. It sounds great but I'm not very familiar with the working student positon. A friend of mine is going to be a working student for kevin bowie over the summer but she is actually paying for that? I just wanted to hear some experiences, and thoughts about it. Thanks!

I was a working student last year at a Morgan Horse Farm in Maine and I loved it. They fed me and taught me alot about riding, training and horses in general. It was alot of hard work, getting up at 6 in the morning, but it is worth it. Since I wasn't living there, I got paid a little but not alot. It was enough though for food and such.

I would make sure you def. Know what you are getting into before you take it. I had a friend who was offered a position as a working student and all she did was barn chores and haying. She didn't get as much riding as she thought she would and she was really disappointed.

Really it's only am and pm feeding, occasionally cleaning the broodmare stalls (there are only 4). I would be able to keep my current ft job. I would work 6 days a week and get a lesson each working day. But it just sounds too good to be true.

I would def. Take that! It sounds amazing! I would love for something like that.

Before you agree, sit down and make sure you both are entirely clear about what both of you will be getting. Working student positions are awesome but you need to have everything very clear before you begin otherwise it all goes to hell in a handbasket. Sweetwhispers, out of curiosity, where did you work?

That sounds exciting! I would jump on it, but like dantexeventer said, make sure you know what you're getting into!
