I have been working with my boy to get him back into driving shape on and off all fall. I picked up a fixer=ups cart that I was hoping to have ready to start driving again by Xmass, but life got in the way and the new hope is by end of March. My boy started life as a driving horse, but when he outgrew his cart and I was not able to replace it with one that fit/balanced right/could afford we have just been using him as a riding horse for the last four years.
My band new biothane harness has never been hitched to a cart!!! Only to the occasional stuff that needed to be drug out of a pasture. In getting ready to hitch again, we have been doing a lot of lunging, ground driving, and long lining - which he does 100% perfect. Now I know from experience that he is much hotter once hitched - I am really thinking of hauling to the big driving training stable less than an hour away for a couple of lessons before I hitch on my own again....
Anyway, all my playing has spurred on the others around the stable. The stable manager went out and bought a mini gelding and has started ground driving him. Yesterday there was a huge tack sale and she came back having picked up a fairly decent mini harness for $25. While there, her boyfriend, who ownes the property, picked up a harness for his Mustand gelding too.
So soon it will not just be me ground driving around, but three of us! The boyfriend is really good at making things and will be making both of them carts. Finally, I will have someone to go out driving with!
