I'd really like to do the 2-day 100-miler next June, but I know I'm going to have to take it easy when we do it. I like to get off and walk/jog with my horse to save his back and legs throughout the ride, so I know I'll be doing this to make the 100-miler possible. However, it's going to take a lot of working out, something I don't usually do! I'd like to set a personal fitness goal to be ready for a marathon by that time and do my own 26-mile jog (with some walking lol) over the course of the 100-miler.

I got a start today, albeit a little pathetic, but it's better than nothing! I went for a jog with my horse, with all 6 feet on the ground. It was a good opportunity to teach him to trot in-hand with me (he's very willing to, but forgets to stay by me!), he kept me at a good pace, and then carried me home when I was too tired to jog anymore!

I just thought this was a fun goal to share and was wondering if anyone else works out to be in better shape for their rides, whether it's to get off and do the work yourself or just make it through the ride on your horse's back. Thanks for sharing!

Sure. I get off and walk/jog a bit (though not anywhere near 26 miles!) on just about every ride, mainly to stretch out leg & seat muscles, but also because I don't find riding to be all that much exercise. Before I got talked into getting a horse myself, I used to go on ~10 mile trail rides with my horsey friends, me walking/jogging while they walked & trotted. Never could really manage much of a canter, though
