Competing from an Older Age

I am aware that there is already a thread regarding competing as adults, but I'd like this to be focused a little differently.

I /am/ with disability, and I will be beginning to compete at an older age. Does anyone know of anyone who wasn't given everything? Someone who started out low financially, or who had a similar disability, or who didn't begin when they were four years old? It seems like all the great riders have been riding /forever/, and it would be inspiring to hear of average people who were successful.

My hat off to your decision.

I can give only one example (but I'm not sure when he started AND he's financially not bad at all) - the cutting guy who is in his 70th (if not 80th), had heart attack, replaced knee, some kind of surgery done on back, and he still competes and rides much better then younger folks at his place.

I've been on my own financially since college. I never rode as a kid except for a few vacation trail rides. I commute 144 miles a day to and from work to pay for my first horse who I bought when I was 40. Nobody ever gave me squat. I work my butt off, do it all for my horse, and love and appreciate every second of time I have to spend with him. We just started showing last year, so only time will tell if we will be successful so the speak. When we're out in the fields running around enjoying ourselves, and I turn into an 8 year old, I don't really care if we never win a thing....wait I'm a grownup now. Yeah I kinda do wanna kick butt!!

You just have to see your distance...you don't have to like it.

That's great!
Horses completely revive youth. I'm only sixteen, but I feel eight too when I ride.
