Could weak ankles be the cause? (didn't post correctly last time sorry)

Ok so problem is I cannot a apply a leg aid when in an active gait this aid should be a please maintain the pace aid but everytime I either fall forward or just look like a flopping chicken.

This is something I would like to sort out. I've being riding 6 years have my own pony for 2 and the only time I've even gotten it remotely correct was a month ago when my instructor shouted leg at me everytime an aid was needed. Fortunately my horse is great with voice commands but I want to do eventing this year and I can't use voice commands for dressage.

So basically my question is could a problem with weak ankles be a cause if this issue or is it all me

Are you positive you aren't standing out of your stirrups? Deep heels are important, but sometime heels too deep are translated into standing out of the stirrups and you pop a bit out of the saddle and lose your leg contact and aide. If you were able to accomplish correct leg aide with your instructor telling you when, I am inclined to thing this is something you are doing without realizing, instead of a physical problem.

I had the same problem! And it turns out I didn't have my leg on the horse properly. I was using the back of my calf (don't ask LOL) instead of the side so my horse had no clue.

If you're worried about weak ankles.. maybe get some support for your boots? Doing exercises off the horse will help strengthen your riding muscles. Have you tried doing leg work in 2 point? Much harder but if you can give cues in 2 point then you can manage sitting down.

Good luck

I have weak ankles and I don't have problems with leg aids. I wear lace up boots (laced tightly) and that gives me the support I need for now. If you are confident enough, I would try to ride without stirrups. It's hard work, but it may help you find the most stable leg position.

For the longest time, I felt like I rode better without stirrups, but it turns out that I was trying to put my heels down so hard, I put way to much weight in my stirrups.
