    Customizing rider gear

My 13 year old daughter will need tall boots this summer. Sadly, cash flow is an issue this year. Before I bought my horse I went on a tall boot binge, and I actually now own 4 pair of tall boots, lol. I did finally find a pair that fit me. Now that I own a horse, there's no money around for adventures like that!

So I have 2 pair that will fit her in the foot (I hope!) but are probably way too tall, as she is only 5' tall right now. Have you ever heard of someone cutting the top off a tall boot to customize it? And would it cost as much as buying new inexpensive ones to do? I have a nice old pair of Ariat's that are probably $250 boots that I paid $100 for. I think it might be worth just cutting the tops off, or am I totally crazy? I broke the swagger tab on those boots so they need to be repaired, anyway.

I also have a pair of old suede real leather full chaps I inherited from my sister. They are WAYY too long. Someone recently told me that riding in full chaps is awesome, and I should try it. Anyone know what sort of shop I should look for to get these chaps shortened to fit me?

It's not crazy, I've cut down boots before. They look best if they are fitted all the way up the calf, otherwise they will probably gap at the top after you cut them. A friend of mine even cut a slit in the back of some boots that were too tight and no one ever noticed.

I've cut boots down before. Granted they were the rubber kind, not expensive fancy ones but if you have 2 pairs you might as well cut one down for her and keep the other one till she gets taller. You'll never have to buy her boots!
