Different exercize --> same result (new instructor)

I just changed instructor, (my old one got an office job for the winter) and had my first lesson with the new one today.

I thought it was really interesting the different things that they have had me do for the same thing. E.g. My old instructor had me do haunches out to increase the horse's obedience + suppleness, and this one has me doing shoulder in for it.

Also, the old instructor preferred it when I rode in a more collected trot, and then change the length of the gait with my leg, this one prefers a medium trot first, then changing the length of the gait with my seat.

I was just curious if anyone on here has similar preferences, or a special way of doing things with their horse and why they chose these?

It totally depends on which horse I'm riding and how they are reacting that day. DWB likes to giraffe so usually I start warm up with long and low. SWB like to go on forehand,so we rarely ask for long & low but ride most of the time in shoulder fore to work on collection and more self carriage. SWB is also older (20) so lots of physical suppling exercises at start of the ride. DWB is naturally supple so not an issue, she needs more mental focusing exercises rather than physical.

SI and Haunches out (HO) work the same muscle groups - just slightly different ways of getting same result. AT upper levels you should be able to move horses body parts around at will - so horse needs to be supple.

There are many different ways to skin a cat ;)

What works for one horse won't work for the next, but there are many different roads to take that will all lead you to the same goal.
