First Fall

Well, it happened. I fell off :( And of course it was when we were cantering, I haven't QUITE mastered that yet. The horse I was riding cut a corner and I wasn't expecting it because I was trying to make her go all the way into the corner, so she turned suddenly...and I didn't. It was so fast I didn't even know what was happening, one second I was riding her fine and the next she had disappeared!

But the good news is I got back on and after a few laps we started jumping for my first time! It's sooooo much fun!

Welcome to the dark side of riding! Lol! I have it happening too from time to time - not fan, but part of riding... My best so far was when I flew over the horse head and landed on my feet exactly in position I was on horse: bent knees, feet on ground (I was riding in western saddle those days and horse spooked and stopped on full canter). When I realize what happened and turned my horse was standing right behind with popped out eyes (and tongue hanging out and stuck between the teeth).

Glad you are OK! :)

Everyone falls off, it's good you got back on. I remember the first time I fell off.... I just laid there and started laughing, horse was less amused. Just be sure to check and make sure you're okay before you get back on :) The adrenalin sometimes makes you feel okay when you might have a nasty bruise or have hurt your head.

Well done for getting back on, other wise you might never have! It stood that you started jumping that day too, a bit of a confidence boost.. after my first fall I had a major confidence dip and it lasted for weeks! Even though I got back.. Well done for not letting it get you down!

Ahh, fun with falls! Glad you're okay!

My most recent fall was entirely my fault, I got into 2-point about 3 strides away from the 2nd to last jump in the course because the course was riding awkwardly. I didn't want to bang on my horse, so I decided just to go into 2-point. I forgot how much he HATES when you get up before the jump, he feels like you abandoned him and for him that means the jump is a no-go! I had time to realize this when I was lying on the ground, haha. Everyone knew I was okay when I looked up to see my horse step on my reins and break them and the first thing I said was "You jerk! You broke my reins!!"

On the plus side, I still jumped the jump. So what, my horse didn't go over with me? I still made it over ;)

Welcome to the "fun side" of riding!

Very true. I usually feel sore only next day, not right after the fall.

Just wanted to add another voice of support. I've had my share of falls, but fell off my current lease mare for the first time on Monday; she spooked, shot off to the left, and I fell straight down as though the rug had been ripped out from under me. My trainer was in the arena lunging her horse at the time, but apparently didn't see the fall. She turned around and saw me on the mounting block getting back on, and was like, "What happened?" I told her I fell, and she said, "how did I miss that, it was all so quiet" :) After I rode a few times past the scary spot, I got off, and she called over to me, (jokingly) "did you dismount this time?!"

Anyway, good for you for getting back on. And glad you're no worse for the experience.

I've certainly have had my share of falls in the past and I am grateful for never having been injured severely as of yet. One of the more amusing dismounts was-when climbing out of the creek, my horse was following another and only he slid on his rear feet in the wet clay and I found myself launched out of my saddle sideways and landed directly on my two feet just like I had planned it. No one even knew what had happened as it happens so fast. I just started to laugh.

Welcome to the gravity club! Glad you're okay.

You just have to see your distance...you don't have to like it.

I remember my first fall after getting back into riding after a four year break. I was cantering in a circle and there were some kids riding around the other side of the arena getting warmed up for their lesson. Basically they went left, I was preparing to turn right. Toby suddenly turned left to follow them and I went right :P

It happens to everyone. Glad to hear you're OK!
