I am having a hard time paying the board at the farm I keep my mare at. I don't get to ride her every day, and I am not in the financial position to compete her. I'd like her to get shown and ridden more, and I need help with board. Half-leasing her seems logical, someone gets her every other week and pays for some to half of the board. I have a few concerns, though. I'm afraid of someone ruining her, getting her hurt, teaching her bad habits, etc. What are benefits and drawbacks of half leasing?

- financial
- your horse does get ridden more, and can learn TONS with the right person
- horse gets to know more than one training style
- you may end up with a friend for life (I did)

- you do have to outline everything and be very clear in the contract
- you must figure out schedules - ususally the week is split up into days between owner and lessee, with provisions for clinics, shows etc.
- you must clearly outline veterinary care/medical problems and who foots the bill. An easy solution is insurance for major medical and mortality.
- the lessee must carry insurance for themselves and sign a waiver releasing you from being held responsible for any damages/personal injury.

- your horse is shared, and if they have certain days set, you can't go work the horse
- you may get someone that you don't quite agree with - easily solvable by having an early termination clause
- legal issues
