Help with posting trot, please!

Okay, so I need some help. I am doing the posting trot in my English lessons, and the only reason I can't canter yet is because I haven't "perfectly mastered" it yet! UGH!! And my instructor says that I post too high, and no matter how hard I try, I can't post any lower. It's very easy for me to post high, and it doesn't interrupt my balance or anything. Can you give me some tips and tricks on how to not post high? Thanks so much!

Quick question, are you pushing off your stirrups to make yourself rise?

Well... Sometimes yes and sometimes no. I'm focusing on keeping my heels down and the stirrups on the balls of my feet. My instructor says to push off from my knees to make myself rise. I try my hardest to understand and grasp what she means, but it's kind of confusing. Most of the time I don't post from pushing off my stirrups, but sometimes I do. It's all confusing, sorry lol.

Posting trot is an ongoing battle for me, and I toohave a tendency to post too high.

So this is one of the only things that helps me: post without stirrups.

Yes, it will hurt. I'm finally at that stage where my confidence is up enough withmy horse that I've started to do this again after many months... And man, I forgot how hard it is! Can barely make it once around the ring.

Try this:

(In private...)

Stand on the floor with an imaginary horse between your thighs....

First, do your rising style which I'm guessing is an up-down that involves bending and straightening in your ankles and knees?

Now - and do this slowly -

Sit on your imaginary horse, and slowly push your pelvis forward. This movement will create a rise from your knees, but a much smaller one than the first rising. Your upper body and head will be rising, but very little.

Now hold on to your imaginary reins, keep your upper body soft and relaxed, and repeat.

Aren't you glad I told you to do this in private?

Get up, get going, seize the day. Enjoy the sunshine, the rain, cloudy days, snowstorms, and thunder. Getting on your horse is always worth the effort.

Thanks, Shropshirerosie! That actually helped me a BUNCH! The only let down is that I can't do this under saddle until next month. I usually do lessons once or if i'm lucky, twice a month. I would really like to do it more often, but I'm so excited for my next one! I'll practice this everyday, and my instructor will think I'm a totally different person, doing the posting/rising trot so well! Thank you!
