Is it the horse, or just plain speed???

I recently bought a pinto (as in color, not breed) qh x arabian. Her canter is wayyyyyy to fast. Everyone at the barn says it feels that way, because of her short legs (she's 15.1). I'm not sure, I just think she's going too fast. How do I fix this??? 'Cause I really want to jump her.

15.1 is short? Lol. :-p

You need to learn to slow her gaits down but not slow down enough to get into a walk.. takes practice just keep trying untill you get it right and then keep her in the gait you want, lol.

My horse is the same (pinto qh x arab), but shorter (between 14.2 and 15, no stick). My horse takes it easy, has a pretty nice, collected canter so highly doubt its height.

But... She started off quick. I just cantered the snot out of her so she could learn on her own what is best so far as feet placement and a cruising speed, so to speak.

My qh (honest 14'3) has short legs and long body, and her canter (when she's balanced of course) is very nice and feels "controlled" (if you know what I mean). Your horse may be either too fast (my paint used to be like that - wanted to run, run, run until we started working on her moving properly and listening to the rider), or she's unbalanced and has very short stride so it indeed "feels" fast.

In either case I'd look for the help from the trainer (read, some lessons with the good instructor  ). You'll need one anyway if you want to teach her correctly to jump.

She could be short striding as a result of just not knowing better or she could be in pain. See if you can longe her and see if her stride is different.

Look in your other thread, I posted a reply to both but forgot to add make sure it isn't the rider. It took me a few rides to realize that I wasn't helping my horse by leaning forward alot. She was still fast, but I also added to it. Also try collecting her BEFORE asking for the canter. Get her head set nice and then ask. Both of these things helped improve my horse.

I would get a trainer to check you out. I would type up a couple exercises for you on a normal day but it's 1am and I am exhausted. xD I'm not a good communicator anyway.

Some horses just feel faster than others, but I am willing to bet she is unbalanced and the speed isn't helping.

Looks like a pretty nice canter to me.

Sure, you could collect/slow her up a tad more, but doesn't need to be much.

Now if your friends are riding 16.2 hh horse, yeah, your 15.1 horse will feel "fast" because they are smaller.
