Had no Idea where to put this.. my new horse's name is Skittles, but I really don't like it. I've heard it's bad luck to change a horse's name though. What are your thoughts? I know someone who changes her horse's names when they arrive, and she's had terrible luck with injuries!
I know it's probably an opinion, but I was curious what everyone thought..
I changed my horse's name for protection reasons. He's in the horsey witness protection program now so his previous abusers don't come looking for him

I have a tendency to give my horses a million nicknames anyway, so I never bothered changing their "real" name. The horse we have now, though, we have no idea what her name is/was so when we got her my daughter renamed her. We haven't had any major injuries, but she is the most clumsy/accident prone horse I have ever had and constantly finds new ways to give herself minor boo-boos -- I don't think that has anything to do with the name change, though.
We change horses' names at our barn quite often when they first come in, and I can vouch that nothing tragic has happened to any of them. If the name is really going to annoy you that much, go ahead and change it. Sometimes the name just needs some getting used to, so maybe keep it for a while longer?
G boy wasn't Gonzo when he came, most likely. Because, honestly? If you were constantly hitting and starving your horse, would you name it Gonzo?
It's a bit of cutesy name for an abuser to call their horse.. They sold him to my barn, so they won't look for him though.
He hasn't had one injury since we bought him.
We change their names when they first come in, but if they are sold in the barn their names stay the same. For what it's worth...I have only ever known one "Skittles" my entire horsey career...and she was INCREDIBLE. =)
Zephs name is really Chief... mom had he desire to change it... hes 8.
Storms now called Tornado... hes 22.
Phillips nick name is Prince Phillip, i call him either "Prince" or "Phillip", hes costumed to both lol.
But... your horsey doesn't look like a "Skittles" to me. You know how some horses fit their names and others you're like "whaaaat?" I think Colby fits well.
