Lovemarcy- I already do cheat a little since I don't wear a real shirt under my coat usually, just a tanktop and a Dickie so I have the "look" without the layers. This way I can keep the coat and the look while not having as much heat.

If it's a big show- always wear the coat.

But if it's a local schooling show- a clean polo and a nice belt looks just as polished.

At one of the local shows down here, they request polos only during the summer circuit. They dont want riders passing out from heat exhaustion. :)

"....has anyone tried the new coats that offer the coolmax option? I'm not really sure what the material is but according to a friend, it cuts down on heat quite well!"

Even when the coat is optional I will wear it. Mind you I live in Alberta and HOT to us is nothing like the temperatures they get down in the southern states.

I would say listen to your body. If the coat is optional, there is a reason why and its not worth it to endure heat exhaustion. It seems like ever since I first got heat exhaustion, I have been more susceptible to recurring problems with it. To that point, if the heat is that extreme, I would also carefully consider what is best for the horse.
