    I need your opinions

Ok, so I've been thinking about going to an equestrian camp this summer. I've ridden western my entire life, but the program is half English half western. My main issue is that I'm very overweight and not sure if I should really go ( I've never seen a fat person ride English) what do you guys think I should do? Any advice? Thanks :)

I would say to not let your weight hold you back on something you think is fun and want to do. I have seen all types of riders ride both English and Western.

You may go and learn to love it, or go and realize you want to stick to Western. Regardless, it is only for the camp, and you will be able to experience something new!

I've seen all different shapes and sizes of people riding all different styles. The only thing I wouldn't recommend if you're heavier is riding bareback, because a saddle will help distribute your weight so that the horse stays comfortable. They make saddles and horses to fit every kind of body. Nothing to keep you from having fun!

Have you checked out the Plus sized forum here? You might not be so rare as you think you are. Lot of "big" girls ride.

I would say go for it! Since you have been riding western I am assuming that you are not physically too heavy for a horse, so you should not let your self esteem hold you back! You do not need to be in the English world for long before you see that people range from twig thin to quite hefty. I didn't know that we had a plus sized forum, but I'd check it out so that you see another body type out there!

I guess that would depend on what your definition of "fat" is. I see people call themselves fat, meanwhile they are a size 4 jeans. You can be to big for a horse, but not a type of riding. As long as all the saddle fits you and the horse well it should be fine for the both of you.

Also, regardless of which you prefer there is always something to be learned when switching or trying new disciplines. I've done a lot of English eq, dressage, jumping, team penning, barrel racing/gaming, reining, and I drive and ride gaited horses. I'm sure there is a few other things I'm missing.
