So I have this Pony that my friend owns and she boards her at my barn. She's a very cute 13hh Bay Morgan cross Welsh Pony name Grace. My friend who owns Spiritis only 10 and a very good rider but she's not sure if she should show her in Jumpers or Hunters. I'm pretty sure the pony could do both but Grace only wants to focus on one riding discipline right now. Heres a video of Spirit Free Jumping. And a video of me and grace riding her. (I'm not to big for Spirit.)
It's hard to tell when you slow down the video at the jumps. I realize you are doing this to show her form over fences, which seems good.
Is she long-strided? If so, she would do well in either ring. If she's short-strided, though, you're going to have a hard time in the hunter ring. If she's fast and can turn on a dime, I would be inclined to go with jumpers.
Just my opinion...
If she's going to be a jumper she's going to need good skill on the flat ecause it transfers over. She as a rider will also need skill on the flat. You can't just jump all the time. If she does jumpers, her flatwork will be hunt seat. You don't just ride however you want if you're a jumper. . Theres flat between the jumps - cant be flopping about like a trout out of water in between the fences and expect good form over them.
I think she should get herself solid on the flat with the pony in hunt seat then bump it up with jumping when she's ready. Posted via Mobile Device
Personally, I think she'd make a better jumper. She doesn't look like she'll be able to go around and hit 8 perfect spots and still jump nicely. I don't think she'll have the stride to be really competitive either.
But as people have already mentioned, there's going to be a lot of overlap between the two. If she can't do the flatwork nicely, she'll struggle to do well in either.
