New to English Riding

I have been riding for decades, but have just started riding english. My 12 yr old gelding (my avatar) doesn't have the speed to be a barrel horse and he has won some ribbons in open shows for western, so I figured we should go all around at open shows. I have people at the barn where I board that are helping me with my riding position, etc. My question would be what attire is appropriate for an open show? Can you ride in half chaps, paddock boots, breeches, shirt and helmet? Or do you need the boots? Luckily the first open show around here is more of a schooling open show, so I can see what others are wearing. Any help would be great for this newbie!!

For open shows (especially schooling type) half chaps are perfectly acceptable :)

Yes, for schooling shows half chaps and paddock boots are fine. Granted, you would probably want them to match (No brown boots and black chaps, or vice versa) but even then, depending on the show ...

Breeches: Beige or greenish beige for hunters would be acceptable. And in the summer most schooling shows will waive off the jackets (especially in the south) and you can wear just a normal show shirt, or in some cases, a nice polo shirt. (The color of the show shirt varies by person. From plain white to pinstriped, soft pastels, etc. Polos can be just about anything, but I might not go for magenta. )

If you do decide to get a jacket, dark blue or black would be fine.

Thanks for the replies. Since the post, I have purchased a saddle with almost everything needed. I got a pad today since I gave back the borrowed tack. I have cantered in my saddle and even did small jumps today! And the best part is I had a blast and stayed on!!! The first open show here is March 19. I am so excited about it.

Congrats!

I grew up riding in a western saddle, doing trails on grade horses, then went the English route in college for IHSA. I absolutely LOVE riding English. I only wish I could have done it when I was younger.
