polo/leg wraps

Can't say this belongs here, but here goes-

I adore the look of polo leg wraps while riding. I have a dressage horse and a horse I ride with combined training in mind. I have used splint and brush boots before, but never pads and wraps. I don't plan on showing, just for my own vain schooling purposes.

Can anyone say if it's worth the time and effort beyond the look? As in for support and protection. And perhaps give tips for wrapping?

Polo wraps provide no support and minimal protection against knocks. If a horse interferes you're better off with boots. It's also way easier to screw up wraps and hurt your horse. Either through uneven wrapping causing a bow, or if it comes loose. I'm very experiencee wrapping and I even ended up giving my horse a bandage bow last year. If you want to wrap get someone who knows how to show you.

That being said, I wrap one of mine on all 4 for dressage. He has special BoT wraps though.

The work involved in putting on wraps for schooling, taking them off and rolling them up isn't worthwhile, there are so many different boots on the market now that do a better job of protecting and/or supporting the leg you're much better off buying something that does the job you need it to do - even if its just to look pretty.

A lot of it has to do with this new trend of matchy matchy horse tack. These days when wrapping people put toweling pad underneath to even out the pressure but really you should get someone to teach you to wrap as it can damage a horses leg if done incorrectly.

I ride with them occasionally if I feel like wrapping and re rolling but mostly I use boots saves time and effort.

I started thinking about getting matching everything for my boys, then realized I'm in my 30s and riding alone, so decided matching colors wasn't worth the cost or effort. I get a lot at tack sales and swaps and that doesn't offer much pickiness.
