Questions about competition from a non-horse person!

Hello everybody!

I am just your average college student who, admittedly, does not know anything about horses and does not ride. But within the past few years, I have reconnected with some friends who are avid riders (actually, as of the posting of this thread, I am watching the live stream of the PA National Horse Show bc I know a few folks who are competing in the medal finals tomorrow).

I have a couple of questions about judging and competition (and please forgive me if my terminology is just dead wrong ) :

1. Are there deductions if a horse clips a jump but does not dislodge the bar (or bars)?

2. To riders watching other riders, is it obvious when someone has a near-perfect or immaculate round?

Thank you very much! Hopefully I can learn a bit during my time on these forums!

#1 - It depends on the class and the rules for the class. The higher level competition, the more likely a touch is to count. Usually in the rules it will tell you how many points they'll deduct for various faults. Usually a rail down is 3 faults and if a touch counts, it's 1 fault. If it's a timed round there can be time faults too.

#2 - If it's a hunter round you can tell if it's an excellent round or not but there's a subjective element that's up to the judges. If it's strictly a jumper round then it's all about time and clear or not clear and if there are faults.

A Hunter round is different from a Jumping round, so you'd have to give us the names of the classes for a little bit better definition. Does that help a little?

It certainly does! And I am referring to the "Hunter Seat Equitation Medal Final" if that helps!

Oh, and I have another question to tack on, riding-wise: what is the significance of riders wearing white pants vs. tan pants? I'm noticing both in the warm-up round that's live right now.

Is it Hunt Seat Equitation Medal Final (over fences) or (flat)? And re: the breeches, it's personal choice, usually depending on the color of your coat. White is generally considered more formal and will probably be worn with a black or maybe dark navy coat. Since it is a formal class, you could see some in shadbelly, canary vest and white breeches.

For the equitation part, it's judged on the rider and the horse should reflect the rider's ability. You generally see the dark navy or black hunt coats, not sure about the shadbelly. Equitation riders wear the tan breeches, as well as hunters. White breeches are normally just seen in jumpers.
