Saddling Problems

Hello This is going to sound really stupid but I can't seem to saddle my horse with an english saddle. He stands fine but he bloats and I can't get the girth close enough to the billets to buckle. I measured the length of girth I need and bought the correct size but I just can't get it fastened. Is there a trick or a piece of equipment or something that I could use to get the girth buckled? Would a specific kind of girth work better? I am trying to see if the saddle fits the both of us as I want to take english riding lessons in a few weeks. I have no problem with my western saddle, I girth it up walk him a couple minutes and then finish tightening it.

What kind of English saddle?

I've found girths with elastic on BOTH ends, are easier to fasten.

If you can't get the girth close enough to the billets to buckle, then your girth is too short. Are you on the longest hole on the off side when you try? If not, try it there, and buckle only to the first hole (if you can get it there), starting with the billet closer to the back of the saddle. For some reason, its easier to get this one done up first. After walking the horse around a bit, bring it up one hole on the off side and then tighten the correct side (you may have to walk again). If you're already on the last hole on the off side, then your girth is definitely too short. If you measured 46 inches, from bottom hole to bottom hole on the billets, a 46 won't fit, you'd need a 48, or possibly a 50. (Just an example, no idea what size your horse is!)

Its just an all purpose english saddle. Since I have never bought an English girth before I did a search on the internet and measured it as was suggested from 2nd billet hole to 2nd billet hole. He is 50" so I bought a size 50. Calico you are saying that is too short so I am going to buy one a couple of inches longer today and see if that solves my problem. Thank you everyone for replying and I will follow up after getting the longer girth.

It is always goo to have 2 girths, while the horse can change a lot.... For exampe I have a pony mare, I use a 100 cm girth on her hith a all purpose X dressage saddle / Wintec 500 VSD. But I have also an AP saddle for ponies, and it as shorter belts for the girth (sorry, I am not English, I don't know the name), and I have to put a sheepskin underneath, otherwise it is too wide. I have to use a 120 cm girth on that one. I rememer last winter, I had to use the 120 cm even on the large saddle, cause she got too fat so don't throw the shorter one into trash, you will use it some day :)

And I do it so, tahta I put the girth on one side on the longest position, then git the girth on the longest position on the other side. Then I tighten it up on the right side-where the girth is put on the saddle prmanently, I mount up and after walking etc I tighten it up on the side where it stood on the longest-on the left side...
