Side Saddle anyone?

Hi :) New to the forum!

Anyway, I guess this can be a thread regarding all things Side Saddle; I've ridden Side Saddle on my old hunter horse, but have recently (a few months ago?) started teaching my Saddle Seat horse how to ride, with the hopes of showing him at a Class A show next month. He's doing great and actually prefers being ridden aside compared to being ridden astride now!

I have my trainer helping me along and watching me; though I'm (sort of?) experienced riding aside, I'm starting to figure out there's a world of difference between derping around on a hunter horse for the heck of it and trying to prep a Country Pleasure horse for showing.

So ladies (or gentleman; I won't judge!), any tips in general on Side Saddle? One thing I'm noticing is that I start to shift towards my inside when asking for the canter. It's very subtle and I only notice it when I'm asking for circles, but it's still worthy of noting, and while my trainer says it's just something I need to ride through and practice until my core strengthens up, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help speed that process up.

I have never rode side saddle (except when I was a kid playing around on my very patient horse, with a western saddle...lol), but I have always wanted to try.

I do have a question, and please excuse my ignorance, but is ridding side saddle less strenuous on your hips? I have bad hips and am afraid the day will come when it will be too painful for me to ride, but maybe I could ride side saddle?

It's totally fine! I personally haven't noticed any difference in stress on my body, (but I'm also only 18; plenty of time left for my joints to start protesting) but I've heard that riding aside is GREAT for people who have difficulty riding astride, for whatever reason. You're very, very secure in the saddle, and in an emergency situation, if you clamp down your thighs on the bars, you are not going ANYWHERE.

The saddle I ride in is very comfy, and both I and my horse prefer it to riding astride now :)
TL;DR: I don't know for sure, but have heard it can help people with bad legs, so can only assume that could extend towards hips as well.

Thanks I really appreciate it! I've always had it in the back of my head that riding aside might work, you have just put my mind at ease!

I know the saddles are not cheap, maybe I'll start looking now 😉

Hehe, you definetly should my trainer is extremely generous with me and lets me use hers (she went to Nationals way back in the day with it, if I remember correctly). It's a whole lot of fun!

Rush and I

With commentary from my trainer

I tried to post a direct link and it didn't work very well >.> How do I code so the video shows up, rather than a hyper link?
