Steeplechasing Question?

Okay as we all know my thoroughbred was an ex racer, but the rescue didnt know exactly what he was raced in, and I finally talked to the man who had him as a colt and raced him and he said that he was raced, but I said that he was not tattooed and never has been tattooed, he has a registered name as "T.V. Special" up in northern maryland/virginia.

Does anyone know for steeplechasing, do they HAVE to be tattooed? Because that COULD be one race that he did do. POSSIBLY. Im just thinking outside the box here.

I didnt think organised steeplechasing had been done in this country for quite some time-???? In Europe it lasted longer just re named, If your horse is not tatooed I would think he was not raced in the US, every TB and Standard Bred I have seen that raced has a tatoo . There are a bunch of long term rescue people on this forum-they will know, you may have to seek them out in "protection" or research your horses background via registration/local tracks etc. Let me know if steeplechasing is still going on will you?

I thought it wasn't raced in the you.S for a while as well. Atleast that's that I had heard and all, In maryland, I recently got invited to a steeple race called The Foxhall Farm Trophy Team Chase in March. But I mean I don't know if in any other states is it raced. I FINALLY found my horse, Bayberry's registrations; His registered Race name is "T.V. Special" and his sire & dam were some GREAT racers in Maryland and his grandpa is SECRETARIAT!

Bayberry was never raced.

You are a lucky lady to have that bloodline, my grandmother was a steeplechaser in the early 1900's one of the few women competing-she died in her late 20's from a fall. I will look up that event-how long have you had your gelding?

I've had my gelding since August, I adopted him from a rescue up in northern Maryland.

Yes I am riding him, mainly hunter/jumpers, I'm starting him also in dressage and regular jumpers. Luckily, he wasn't too badly in shape when I first met him. The rescue mainly brought him up to his weight, maybe a little below normal but he looked good. He just wasn't handle well enough. He was raised in a racing barn, but never was raced and he wasn't with a good trainer at all. He treated him wrong and he's the type of horse where he is VERY, INCREDIBLY smart, and he needed someone to care for him everyday. His health is all good now, all shots are taken care of, got some meat on his bones, and he's a star athelete. And so a week after I got him, we took him to a show and jumped 2'6"-3 ft without any problems. He's a great boy and a trustworthy friend.
