Training Jumper Pony-Help!

I am training my trainers horse, and he has a HUGE potential to be a Jumper. He is a 5 year old 12.2hh American Shetland Pony. I don't ride him much at all because he is a little stinker! Anyways, he has been jumping 2'0-2'3 with me and he does great in the beginning, the after that he just refuses it or runs out. Is there any way I can stop this? Thank you!

I would not ride him, just lead, but try different things. Eg, ground poles & wing thing on the side.

This may be an obiovus question, but if you are training your trainers horse, why ont ask your trainer?

I would just bring it back to doing poles, small x-rails, etc. Then, when the time is right go back up to 2ft / 2'3. Also, you can try putting poles leaning down from the pole on the jump so he can't run out, and then slowly start taking them away. As for the refusals, make sure you're sitting deep and using your leg correctly. Is there a specific way he always runs out , by the way? (left or right?)

What about the possibility that you are over jumping him, because you aren't riding him that much? Maybe he isn't in shape enough to be jumping more then a few jumps, and starts to refuse because he is tired, and worried he will not make it over the fence.

Try going back to just flatwork for a while, and bring him back into shape, then start with cross-rails, and work your way back up to the 2'+ jumps.

He runs out to the left. I am going to get him conditioned over the winter by lunging him, so he will be good to go my spring. I might lunge him over cross rails but I don't know.

Too much lunging is not good for the joints.

How about posting some videos? We could help assess what is going on.

I would be lunging him once a week. So he should be fine.
