I've been riding english for over a year now (but I've been riding for 10 years), taken a few english lessons, but since the trainer is 4 1/2 hours away, it's really tough to get to her, but when I do get there I get a good 2 hours of riding in (when I tire out my pony, I go get one of her lesson horses. I make the most of my lessons!)
My pony is doing well -- he doesn't seem to mind the change in tack (western-english). He can do halfway decent lead changes (usually). His 'gears' work nicely (I can extend and collect all of his gaits). We're working on half halts right now. And I'm working myself on trotting on the diagonal, which I find difficult!
I've never jumped before. At lessons, I've worked on a two point in a w/t/c, but never over a jump (yet!)
In the meantime I've been lunging my pony over little verticals. He takes them like "no big deal, ma".. I've been using trot poles with a little crossrail at the end of them for the past couple months (undersaddle) because that's what I've been told to do when starting out. (I left the setup out in the pasture accidentally after riding for a day, and I actually caught him going over them himself. Weird horse.
And let's be honest, I've popped him over a couple logs here and there, no big deal
He's completely sound, 12 years old, just really a willing horse. I'm obviously not going to show without a regular trainer, but my goal for him is to be an 'all-around horse'.. and jumping will definitely look good on his report card!
Do you think it's a good idea for me to be jumping him? I know green+green=black&blue, but I'd like to think he's not a green horse and I try my best to be a decent rider
Do you think we're ready?
I'm open to any answers, speak your mind!
