What discipline would this be worn for?

I saw this show jacket on facebook and I'm absolutely in love with it.. But what discipline would you wear it for? It has almost the classic Hunter look, but it has 4 buttons? And it looks almost too "formal" for show jumping?? Unless that's just me. I don't have any experience with showing as of yet, so please forgive me if I'm wrong.

I'm going to be showing mainly IHSA for like the next 5 years or so (still a high school senior but haven't been able to show yet even though I've ridden 4 years, but I'm going to do IHSA in college) and I already have a hunter show coat, but I'm really interested in buying this jacket... But I assume it's for show jumping, correct? (I didn't realize they wore ties in the ring?)

Thanks. :D

See, that's what I thought too. That's why I was thinking it was show jumping, since hunter is 3 buttons. But I didn't know they wore ties?

I didn't really think it would be dressage though, because I saw pictures of people wearing jackets sort of like these with jumping saddles. And aren't dressage coats black?

This coat looks like it for the British or Australian style show hunter classes. They wear ties instead of a ratcatcher. Hopefully one of our members from those countries can chime in.

However! 4 button coats are actually becoming quite popular in the hunters and especially equitation though usually in navy, black, and hunter green. This coat is quite lovely and you could probably wear it in the US, without the blue on the collar though, in a hunter class and not stick out too much. It would look very out of place in the jumpers, tweed is pretty much never seen in the jumper ring.

If you will be primarily doing IHSA don't waste your money on this coat. Get a nice black or navy coat which is the uniform in equitation and can be worn in the hunters and formal jumpers as well. Much better bang for your buck.

Not typically British as we mostly go for the more traditional tweeds (bit of a flap going on over there right now over 'loud checks in the show ring!!!) My tweed hunter showing jackets (UK) all have 3 buttons, you can get them with 4 but not so much
I think it looks like the type of design of jackets seen more in Europe - Pikeur do a range of 4 button jackets that they just call 'competition' jackets but I think if you're wanting to get a jacket purely for US hunter classes you'd do better to stick with tradition and 3 buttons and leave the 4 buttons to the dressage folk
