Vet Advice Wanted

For all you vets out there, I'm currently going to school to be a vet tech (looking into continuing on to am equine program), and I'm just wondering how you balance work with vacation and time off if at all. How far ahead do you tell your clients you'll be out of town? Do you refer them to another local vet? Thanks!
