We don't like the bushy tail look, and we have horses that double as Hunters and Eventers so we like to braid, not pull, the tails.
I personally prefer sew-in button braids with waxed thread(for eventing/dressage). Some of the girls at my barn prefer hunter braids though, which is totally accepted in eventing but if they went to a hunter show with button braids people would be like what the heck are you doing
We do have a lot of drafts at the barn with long manes, so when they show I give them french braids, which is just fine too.
I personally like using white yarn or adding white bands/tape/clips for Eventing/Dressage. It really calls attention to your braids and makes the neck 'pop'. I've never been to a E/D show where anyone had a problem with it.

My early days of tails. Started off nice, but then took too much hair and went too far down the tail bone. I also pinwheel my tails now.

French braid!

Training braids for fun

And Gypsy's after braid perm, laugh it up

These are the only pics of my braids! I need some more.
