End of the road for Willie :(

Well, Willie had a vet appointment today to really finalize where he's at and what he can do since I've been planning on selling him.

Unfortunately jumping is pretty much completely out of the question for him. While he's been going sound, it's more dumb luck or the fact that he has a high pain tolerance that he's not limping around on three legs. He's got chronic desmitis (inflammation of the ligaments, namely his suspensory) in both hind fetlocks, but more pronounced in his right hind. All four branches of the suspensory are inflamed and may possible still have tears in them. It's not something that can really be recovered from at this point. Mogie and I were so hoping that he had just developed some arthritis and that's why he was still a little filled behind, but alas that is just not the case.

Hopefully we'll be able to find someone who just wants a horse to do some flatwork on and hack around on. On a good day he can hop over a few small jumps, said the vet. It's frustrating because I feel like I've spent so much time trying to piece everything back together for him, and because we just did a little schooling show this past Tuesday at the BN level and got 2nd with a 32.5, however I know he'll be happy, fat, and sassy if I can find the right sort of home for him. I've already started talking to people and there's someone that might actually already have a potential home for him. We'll just have to see where things lead us, and hopefully I can find him somewhere to be happy before the end of the month.

:( I hate finding out that the horse you love can't do what you love doing. We found out that Jasper could never do much of anything really, other that trail and fun riding, because of string halt. Best of luck finding him a great home, and finding your next partner.

I am so sorry Strange! That is heart breaking news, another friend today told me that her mare's career is over as well - I know it is very hard. :(

I wish there were something I could do, to make it better. My heart goes out to the both of you.

Thanks everyone. :)

I've known I needed to sell him, but I was so hoping that it would be to someone who just wanted to get started in eventing and needed a BN/N packer to take them around for a while. He loves his job, and I hate to see him not be able to do it.

I'm happy to announce that there are two possibles for Willie already. Deb and Ed, the two wonderful people who took him in for two weeks before I got down to Aiken know of some people that are looking for a pet/trail horse and is going to talk to them then call us back and let us know if they're interested. One of the prospects is a woman married to a farrier who has three grandkids, she does mostly rehab work with horses. The other is an older woman who is strictly a trail rider and goes hacking all the time. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that. Those situations sound promising, though!

I also have a friend in Florida that has a 24 y/o paint and she said that if he's affordable enough she might consider taking on Willie too, as a pet/trail horse. She's got two young kids and I think Willie would enjoy being with another horse and getting lots of attention.
