EEEK I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!! That is awesome that you are going to New Zealand! I have a few great friends there who are Mid Level Eventers, and I am impressed with their guts, their abilities and their education!
Personally me, if I were your Coach, I'd say go with the School Master for your level of Eventing and just getting into the sport - but, you have to go with what horse is compatable for you, your personality type and what it is that you want.
Some would feel confident on a School Master and learn alot, while others would be totally bored and want something more "challanging" so that decision is yours.
Personally, my opinion, for someone just venturing into the sport, I'd look for a horse with the experience and the know how and a horse who can pack his rider around to help them grow, learn and mature as an Eventer.
That doesn't mean he/she has to be a school master...but one with enough experience under their girth to help a "newbie" out.
Purchasing - IMVHO, I would lease. You aren't going to be living there, and there is that "one day" where you'll move back to the U.S.A, and will have to leave your beloved behind, and I think leaving a horse you own, would be far more difficult than leaving a horse that has a place to go back to when you cannot be there anymore....does that make sense?
I want to wish you all the best, and you have to promise to take lots of pictures and keep us up to date on everything!!!
