Muscle Building Help- XC Courses.

Hey All!

So, I am currently competing Training, and do not have my own horse. I have realized that during my cross country courses at events, my legs get incredibly tired, and I have realized its from staying up in a halfseat/2point between fences and gallop stretches.
I'm not entirely used to that. During jump lessons, I usually keep a pretty solid, or veryy slight half seat, and even then, I just go, domy course, and stop and wait for the other riders to go, so I don't have much practice keeping half seat for long periods of time.
I included that fact that I do not ride my own horse, because that means I only ride up to 3 times a week, which makes it harder to practice. I'm going to assume that the biggets way to strengthen my muscles is just to ride around in two-point for long periods of time. I was wondering if there was anything else I can do, specifically at home, but also on horseback to increase my muscle strength, in whatever muscles I need to keep two point?

Oh, and one minor detail- my next event is in exactly a week, so I reallyyy need help.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can really do in a week, I don't know about at home excersizes but no stirrup work and lots of 2 point at walk trot and canter will really help strengthen your legs. Hopefully someone else will be able to help more, good luck!

Go mountain biking or just biking in general. I thought my legs were getting stronger until I had to ride my bike home after dropping my car off at the shop. Oh the burn!! It was a rude wakeup call that my legs are indeed not strong.

Also, pilates for core and leg muscles does wonders.

Haha I do eventing and dresaage horses for a living, even riding all day (5-8 horses)i found I still wasnt quite fit enough to do more than 1 horse at events, without getting sore muscles. So I started doing all my warm up on all horses, everday, in two point, started just building up my basic fitness, ie runing and moutain biking.

All of the above really got me fit and now I don't have a problem. Also I know a freind who had a similar situation to you and she swore standing on the edge of a step with her heals hanging over the edge and crouching in 2 point was was got her fit enough for xcoutnry, she would do it for liek 10mins at a time watching tv.

My GCSE stuff says...
It takes at least 3-4 weeks for any noticable muscular changes to happen, no matter how much training you do. I wouldn't do loads this week running up to the event because you will wear yourself out and you legs will be in agony by the 3rd jump! Leave a day or two off for rest and recovery if you do start a programme.

Train between 3 and 5 times a week for now and vary the things you do, riding, yoga, dance, running etc. aim to get a bit of progressive overload in there as the weeks go by too or after 2 months or so you wont be improving your muscular endurance, just maintaining it

Lots of exercising at the gym/home for your whole legs, calves, thighs, inner thighs. I used to do yoga and pilates and that helped a lot

After my first pace of the season today I am DEFINITELY feeling it!! Calves are sore the most but really not too bad. That was 1h 30m mostly gallop/jumping in all 2pt, and some trotting posting the whole time (big trot through woods) and very very little walking (details in own thread soon). To get in shape for them I do a LOT of work in 2pt. I'll go on a walking trail and still stay standing in 2pt for the whole hour so that i'm sure it's working my lower legs as well as thighs w/o the help of the horse's movement. It's done wonders for also strengthening my back and seat overall. It takes several weeks so I don't know how much you can do in a week but I know long term it makes a huge difference!!!
