When I first started riding I spent a good part of that year on a sweet fleabitten grey pony named David. And I was at least 5'10" at the time (I was 11!). I did look a little silly, but he was pretty stout and on the tall side for a pony, 14 something I think... I never had anyone complain about my being too tall, and I even took him to a hunter pace - we kept up with the "big horses" fine :)

After that I leased the most lovely thoroughbred mare, Dolly. She was 15.3 hands but she was dainty and pretty skinny. So even though she was bigger, I was still 5'11", and I always felt kind of big for her. I guess that sort of proves it really depends on the build of the horse!

That's really interesting pony! I'll have to check that one out!! Thanks!!

I'd be careful about jumping as a tall rider can really load the front end on landing.

I'm 6 foot, and I ride a 13.3hh pony (Candy)...But she really is too small and its way uncomfortable, so I'm moving up into the horse world!

Hmmmm, I often think Im WAY to tall for Rusty, as Im about 5'8"-9, all legs, and Rusty is a slender 14.2 Arab, but you know its not really that bad. I think that stouter ponies especially would be fine. Yes, when Im bareback Im a few inches from being able to touch my toes under his belly if I stretch, and sometimes giving him leg aid can be abit confusing if my stirupps are set at all long as I cant easily nudge him with my heel. Also, when he has his head set like a giraffe Ive noticed it makes me look even bigger on him. If hes in frame, I dont look so huge. Anyways, I love me some ponies ;)

E v e r y horse is good for something. You dont throw a whole life away just cause he's banged up a little...
