I was just curious...what are the most popular breeds or corsses used in CCE...eventing please?

Well you'll definitely see a lot of Thoroughbreds and TB crosses. Draft crosses are pretty popular too. But the great thing about eventing is you'll see many many different types/breeds of horses :) As long as the horse is capable!

It's not like a hunter ring, where if you show up on an arab (nothing against them - I know they can make good hunters ;] )amongst TBs and warmbloods you'll look out of place.

^I rarly see drafts eventing above novice level. Warmbloods, TBs, are popular, but again, almost any horse(if they have the heart and confo for it) could event! No discrimination!

I said draft crosses... mixed with TB or lighter horses. At the events I go to there are tons of Clyde/Shire/Perch crosses hauling butt around the training/prelim courses. Plus, now-a-days draft crosses are considered "warmbloods".

I still don't see alot of those going around above novice or maybe training if your lucky down here.

The most popular breed at mid to upper levles - 3/4 TB, 1/4 Draft. If bred properly. Thoroughbreds still run at all levlels - but they aren't as popular as they used to be.

The reason being is because they are too "fine boned" to beable to survive in this very demanding sport. Same reason why you don't see 1/2 drafts or full drafts at Mid to Upper Levels - too heavy to survive in this demanding sport.

So because the TB is too "fine boned" they found that the majority of the % out there would end up with joint and bone issues, resulting in retirement etc, etc.

So they threw a breed that had bone into the mix.

The 3/4 TB still has the best qualities a TB can offer. Heart. Speed. Stamina. But the 1/4 Draft mixed into that equation - now gave the horse more bone to beable to withstand the demanding impaction from what jumping creates.

AKA Sport Horses.

Irish Sport Horses are VERY prominant in this sport. But don't forget they are 3/4 TB and 1/4 Irish Draught - aka 3/4 TB 1/4 Draft.

I did a bit of research and apparently USA and EUA are tottaly different worlds!!!! Here the most used breeds are:

KWPN (dutch warmbloods)
Belgian Warmbloods
Selle Français
Holsteiner
Irish sports horse

And ocasionally some crosses with other European warmbloods! The Thoroughbred is not used...although last night while watch the European Championships I saw a couple of TH there...and doing well!

Interesting to see these differences

In Australia there still seems to be lots of Thoroughbreds doing eventing.

Although many horses can do the lower levels of hunting, the upper levels require speed, stamina and dressage ability, as well as soundness of body and mind.

I always though my ideal eventer would be maybe 1/4 Irish Draught, and the rest TB. If I was looking for an eventer I would look for something 1/2 - 3/4 TB, depending on the cross.

Around where I'm from there are a lot of ottb ideally a TB cross is nice but I've seen lots of people move up the levels with ottb they are affordable and there are plenty of them

Thoroughbreds still hold their own, for sure. As a WS, I rode more TBs than anything and saw tons at events - and this was Area 2, where we have the largest concentration of CCI**** riders - they still love their TBs!
I agree that it takes a special horse to do well in the short-format at I/A. It's incredibly technical - watch Rolex 2009 and Badminton 1997 in succession for a bit of a culture shock!
