Took my horse to his first trial since he's been barefoot. Got a personal best of 31.5 in dressage to start the day off great tied for 4th. The warmup ring was this hard crushed rock stuff, so we didn't bother to warm up for XC. We were only showing 2'3", so not a big issue. He headed out to the start box and proceeded to eagerly jump every fence. No hint of a runout anywhere except a question that involves going down into a wooded gulley over a fence. Just a little extra leg got that done.
So the last part was stadium which is usually where I lose my placing when he throws in a surprise runout and some easy looking fence. It had poured the night before and there was standing water everywhere on this grass course. I watched 14 other riders go before us. The ones that were not refusing were timid at best about it. I'm sitting there wondering which of the two "barefoot opinion" camps are correct, the ones that say jumping on wet grass is suicide or the ones that say no problem. Our turn comes and I finally get to find out. I trotted in and headed to the first fence. He pricks his ears, picks up a canter and heads to it like the destroyer! He proceeded to barrel through the entire course like his tail was on fire! I was so proud of him. I think I was grinning like an idiot through the entire course. Suffice to say, in this particular horse's situation, jumping barefoot on grass is not a problem and actually makes him more sure of himself.
We ended up tied for 2nd out of 19 riders! Needless to say I am very proud of him. It's the first time I got done with the day thinking it's time to start BN.
I was there alone as usual, so no pics to show. I think there was a photographer there, so I'll repost when the pics are put up. Just wanted to share my fun day!!
