scores

One of my kids just bought a horse through a dressage barn that used to be an eventer. The trainer couldn't tell me a whole lot of his eventing history since she only did dressage with him but I was curious so I looked up his show results online. I'm trying to decipher what is what. Can you tell me a little about the scoring? He seems to have gotten scores in the upper 20's in Beginner Novice and novice. Let's just assume it's a local type show, is this a decent score? Lower is better, right? (I'm a total hunter/jumper princess) If I'm reading them right I think most of his scores in dressage were mid to upper 60's at 2nd and 3rd level. Do they get a separate score for dressage (or even call it 2nd/3rd level when you're at a trial) or am I probably looking at a separate dressage show? I'm looking at a state horse show organization site with a bunch of results so it's a little confusing...

Oh one more question.. how high is BN? Novice??

Yeah, I would kill for my horse to get scores in the 20s. Lower is definitely better. They give you a dressage score as a "penalty" score, then any additional penalties you acquire on stadium or xc are added to that penalty score. On his record, it should have his penalty points for each area and then the total number of penalty points he has.

Beginner novice is a max height of 2'7 (or up to 3ft w/ brush), novice is a max height of 2'11 (or up to 3'7....i believe...with brush)

Hope this is somewhat helpful, I'm pretty new to eventing myself.

Very helpful! Thanks showjumperachel!! I've only schooled cross country... never done a horse trial!
