Thoughts on this clinic...

So I've been thinking for a while about doing eventing, and I've decided that I think my horse and I would really love it and quite possibly be successful. I am moving barns soon, and I am going to have access to a trainer who knows a lot about eventing. However, my current trainer knows diddly squat so...

I stumbled upon this clinic today and I'm thinking about doing it.

It's an intro to eventing clinic about 2 hours from me. Here is the entry form.

My only problem is I've never ridden cross country, nor taken my gelding cross country. I also haven't worked dressage with him much, but that is not as big of a problem. Would it be a very bad idea to sign up for this clinic? It says she is good with greenies...

I just really want to know if he has potential for eventing before I jump off the deep end, ya know?

I consider myself a pretty experienced rider, my gelding and I have schooled up to 3'3". I was originally going to show him in local H/J shows this summer, then I realized I was getting bored...

Hmm, maybe I could email them and ask

Or just list my experience as none on the entry form and see what they say

What do you guys think?

This sounds like a great opportunity for you. They clearly state they're not looking for seasoned eventers, but experience on the H/J circuit is a great foundation. For the experience box, I would state the level you've competed and schooled in hunters and jumpers.

Your foundation from Hunters will translate well to eventing. This sounds like a great clinic to introduce you and your horse to eventing. They're expecting participants to have little/no experience so you'll probably get a safe introduction to the Dark Side.

If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question or asked the question wrong

Go for it!! It sounds perfect based on what you wrote, just to get in and get your feet wet in the discipline. Don't worry too much about what to put on the form, just be honest about your experience, just put 3'3" hunter/jumper, no experience eventing/cross country. They'll place you in an appropriate group with similar riders.

Eventing is SO much fun! But be warned, it's addicting!! ;)
