Not correct.

There is no such race and never has been.

Frank Hopkins made it all up, just as he made up so many things during his lifetime. He was a charlatan and a shyster who knew how to spin a good yarn. Don't give him credit for anything more than that, please.

It's a charming story but that's all it is; a story.

In fact, Disney took all their 'based on a true story' hype off the movie once they were made aware that the story was untrue.

If you don't believe me, do your own research.

I'm afraid that Speed Racer is right. Everything that I've ever found indicates that none of his accounts are true.

That doesn't take away from a good movie but it does diminish the excitement since you were thinking that it was all based on a true story.

I'm not arguing with you, I'm just explaining why I'm right.

Not to throw more cold water on this thread but the paint horse in the movie was not a mustang. I have watched several times and there is no brand from BLM

The one from the movie may not have been but Frank "always rode a mustang" and that was suposedly what the "real" Hidalgo was.

As a matter of fact, if you watch 'The Making of Hidalgo...' material, in typical Hollywood fashion, a number of Paints were used to play Hidalgo in the movie, all air brush painted to look the same.

But I still do love the movie..

On the sixth day, God created the Quarter Horse.
On the seventh day, he Painted the good ones.

BTW, even if they used a real mustang (or several), they would have used makeup to cover it since those brands didn't exist at the time of Hidalgo.

Yep, speed racer is right. He was a hoax. However, the movie is awesome and I honestly believe that a mustang would stand a good chance of winning a race like that. I like the idea that FH created, if he only hadn't been so shady about it.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/
