Ruffian will always be my favorite racehorse of all time! This thread is dedicated to her. She died at 3 years old because of a leg injury acquired while in a match race against Foolish Pleasure. To this day, it was the last match race ever held. She hadn't lost a race in her life, not to mention she was a filly. Can you imagine what she could've accomplished if she'd lived longer?
I remember that race and I admit it put me off watching races for many MANY years following..I had only been recently bitten by the horse bug at that point so was still in the incubation period to horse crazy :). She was a gorgeous TBred and she sure wasn't one to let the "boys" outshine her. From the gossip/scandal that followed, the match race was more a grudge race; an argument between the two trainers as to whether or not a filly could stand up to the rigors of playing with the "boys." Unfortunately the broken leg only showed the possibility that the trainer for Foolish Pleasure was right, but, even the stud colts, ie Barbaro, have had issues.
