cow calving

Well we are on calf watch here! We had to move one of our old cows to a stall in the horse barn. We have nothing but a solid sheet of ice on ground so we didn't want her having it outside with this ice and temp. I love being on calf watch prefer not in this weather we lost 2 calves last year cause it was so cold! Off to check her now!

Oh wow! You start calving early. We won't start calving til March. How many do you have to calve out?

We only have 10 to calve out and all of ours but 3 go march-may but we have 3 that are off schedule of the rest the other 2 have already went one went 3 weeks ago and the other 5 weeks ago we missed the real cold weather with them. We had a couple inches of ice fall last night and it is like a ice rink around here. we didn't want to take the chance of the calf freezing to the ground last year she calved and it was so cold the calf wouldn't eat and we tried to bottle feed but we still lost it! :( I love new little calves or any new baby animals!

Well we went out to check last night about 9:30 and she had just had the calf we have a little bull calf with long legs! I think my two horses must have been her birthing coaches cause they were both standing of watching over the gate I think they have become serrogate uncles! :)

LOL @ the surrogate part! Congrats on your new addition! We currently have 86 that will calve out from March to April.

Must be beef cows? On the farm we have about 10 freshen a week, year round. But that's a dairy farm.
