A good broody hen with brood about anything

The cats can grow up with weird affections

If those affections go too far.....bad things happen.....

I just thought the one kiki looked reallllly mad, but I did see the others looked comfy and rather smug.

OH MY!! Chittens or Kitchens or ?????? What cross that would be!

I have problems with chicken math too! I bought 70 day old chicks and yup, ended up with about 35 that lived. Out of 20 guinea keets had about 5 live, 10 cochins - 5 lived, 10 Wyandottes - only 2 or 3 of them made it, the rest are my Aracaunas and they're doing pretty well. Not thrilled with the last hatchery I used, won't be ordering from them again. So, I'll be ordering from a new hatchery in a month or 2....gotta get my egg laying #'s up, needs them eggs!

Do you sell your eggs? I just eat mine and give the extras away.

I just eat them, cook them for the dogs, and give the rest to family. I'm only getting a dozen or so a day, MAN they disappear fast! No one leaves here without a carton, be it family, guests, propane delivery guy....

Family I feel should pitch in, it costs a fortune to keep these things. Especially when they request I deliver. Most of my family has pitched in, brought me bales of straw for the coop, I told everyone that it would be nice if they occasionally bought a bag of feed in town (told them where and what) and bring it out when they come over, usually they do!

Yikes!

I ordered baby chicks from a hatchery with a friend and we only lost one. He was a packing peanut Rooster, so we weren't exactly *sad*, although much to our hubbies amusement, we tried really hard to keep him alive. We hand-fed him and got some meds from the Vet but we failed. Poor lil guy came unable to walk, just kinda spun in circles and kept flopping over.

I had ordered from this hatchery before and only lost a couple chicks. This year, I ordered early in the year, 70 chicks and 1/2 were dead on arrival. I called them and they replaced the 35 that died. 1/2 of those were dead on arrival and I lost a few more after that. The shipment a 2 years ago was overnighted, they now ship 2 day and it's just too stressful. They shipped on Monday and I didn't get my chicks til Thurs morning. I could have driven to the hatchery and home faster than those chicks flew from TX to OK.

I got my first Americana eggs today. They are almost white. Barely blue. Is this as blue as they get, or will they be bluer later? I guess I should have taken pictures.

Post some pics and I'll try to guess for you, but my experience has been that not only do the eggs get larger as they get more experienced laying them, they also get a little more color. At first they can be almost white, especially the blue or pink ones. I have one hen who lays the pink ones and even now, 2 years later they are very very pastel pink.

If you bought from a hatchery, I doubt they are true bred Americaunas. I don't know any hatchery that has full bred ones. More likely they are part bred, also known as Easter Eggers. If the eggs are green, pink or any color than real blue, they are most likely cross breds. Green eggs are when they are mixed with a brown egg chicken. Yours sound like a cross bred with a white egg layer.

If you want true bred americaunas, you need to contact private breeders of pure bred Americaunas.

I have not seen eggs change colors significantly as the hen gets older. Bigger? Yes. Darker color? Not mine.
