Lockwood, as soon as they start laying I want to be first in line to order eggs! Got a huge run desperate for some gobblers! Posted via Mobile Device
Come shovel some snow and you can take all the poults you want!
And, BRs have at least a little bit of brains. Not saying they always use them, but they have some.
Finally got a few pics of my moms chickens, I've been their sole caretaker this week and I think they are on egg strike Since she's been away egg supply is down, I think one(or a few) chickens may be eating some of the egg as this morning there was only 1 egg and it had been half eaten(I doubt it came out that way lol) BAD CHICKENS! I've also noticed that sometimes while there is no egg in the nesting box there is a wet-ish spot like someone had the shell and yoke. EGH anyway, I came here to post a few pics
Oh no! Do they have oystershell available? That will help.
Mine are only laying a few a day, boooooo winter! I had to buy eggs the other day for some recipes, YUCK!
Love the dominoes!
Mine will eat any eggs that break. They don't seem to relate the unbroken eggs to the ones that are broken. My egg production is way down for the winter too.

Yep, I make sure they always have a separate bowl of oystershell. They are still young yet(7 months) so I guess they may not be up to full egg laying potential yet but we were getting about 1.5-2 dozen a day and now we may not even get a full dozen. Even the 1.5-2 doesn't seem like enough since we have 20 chickens and 5 guinea hens.
I love the Domi's too, I know at least one of them likes to snack on eggs as she tried to take one from my hand once lol My mom comes back on sunday so she'll be back to taking the AM shift lol
Have any of you guys had Black Copper Marans? I've been thinking about getting some, found a great breeder and possibly ordering some hatching eggs...
Dreamcatcher don't you have some? Do they ever go broody?
So far they are at the top of my list...
Here is what I want:
Large
Hardy
Dark brown eggs, lol yeah marans would do it!
Average to above average production
Broody, very very broody!!
I don't really want Cochins or Alstrops. I need a tougher bird.
I've looked at BYC, and all over trying to figure out my next flock. Just can't make up my mind! ARG!!!
HELP!
I got four new hens this week. Just today I got three new "americaunas". The owner said they were purebred and laid blue eggs. When I picked them up, their color told me that they were cross bred Easter Eggers. They did not fit the standard for a pure bred. They said "well that's what the hatchery told us....but they DO lay blue eggs".
Well, wanting blue eggs, I bought them and brought them home. Well, one laid an agg this afternoon, and the egg was GREEN!! Just like my other EE's! GRRRRR.
The other hen I bought was a lovely Black Copper Moran that I was hoping laid a very dark brown egg. She laid and, unfortunately, the egg was only medium brown in color. Oh, well....Ebony is a lovely girl, anyway.
While taking Ebony's photo, Amelia, my silkie/cochin cross wanted to eat the camera!! LOL!
