Put up an ad in BYC too, no replies. Also looking for Black or Golden Laced Wyandotte's, no luck. Seems like everyone is breeding out broodiness, like that's a BAD THING! I hate incubators.
Getting ready to hit "confirm order" on a hatchery site, HOLD ME BACK!!!! |
Several places. I’ve ordered from 2 different hatcheries and there is a big auction place not too far from me that has a bird auction on Fridays. Every type of farm fowl goes through there. Sometimes the prices are as much as a hatchery, sometimes more common chicks like Barred Rocks or RIR go for $0.25 each! (And no S&H)
But…. The breeding isn’t always “pure” so it is buyer beware.
In the past our local Tractor Supply did a big chick order and you have a list to choose from, breed wise, but now they get in a variety of everything as the chicks always get bought.
The local mom and pop feed stores do this and the grain mills too, but as a huge order from hatcheries.
A friend and I are ordering meat birds from the same placs as last year (mom and pop feed store) and they usually order in about 1000 chicks at a time. Because it is such a large order, the hatchery delivers via a special van (Only 2 hours away) so the chicks don’t have to be shipped.
Don’t know if that helped, and too bad you are not closer. I’m going to thin the flock a little and will be selling some SS.
My Silver Wyandottes are alo great brooders.
Hope you did indeed hit “confirm order” (what did you get and from which one? I like Meyer Hatchery out of OH. They are terrific and I can drive over and pick up my chicks in person if I want to.)
OMG Delfina!!
Bwaahhaaaahaha....What a riot!
I have three whit ones.... thanks for the great idea for next year. My son will flip!
