Found something weird in the coop this morning- it looked like "an egg that didn't work"- basically, I found a leathery, light brown (egg colored) rolled up little cylinder about the size of an egg, but not an egg. I didn't see any evidence of the contents of an egg anywhere in the coop. Is this just a defective egg? I've never seen anything like this before, but I'm sure every now and then nature just misses. Should I be worried that this is a bigger problem?

Yup ... sometimes our little chicken factories get their little conveyor belts out of order... my favorite is the shell-less egg....

Chicken ladies, I'm sure I am going to have lots of questions in the near future. We've got chicks here now, DD wanted her own instead of sharing 'The girls' with my mom.

Here is DD's chicken tractor that my dad made. We plan to paint it red to match my barns.

And DD with the chicks when they arrived a couple weeks ago, 22 black stars. Half will be going to my mom's once they are big enough and we will sneak them in at night when her current 'girls' are roosting.

I've heard good things about Black Stars. Hope things go well for your daughters' new "hobby".

Thanks Ca! My mom has reds currently and they have wonderful personalities and are super friendly. Lap chickens. Makes me laugh. We went with blacks for the same reason and their good laying track record. DD has spent a ton of time making them friendly, in the pic she was making folds in her jeans and filling with feed...those darn chicks flock to be in her lap now lol.

I've been meaning to post here for a while, but I keep forgetting. I have up close photos of some of mine, but they are still on my phone. In the meantime, here is my flock in the coop lot, and the coop, inside and out. Hubby's grandad built it like 50 years ago. We added the lot (which STILL isn't big enough and will be added on to this summer) and fixed it all up this spring. Also pics of my oldest holding Spaz, her rooster, and youngest holding Zebra, her hen. We have 5 Speckled Sussex hens, 2 Brahma hens, 3 Brahma roosters, 4 Americauna hens, 2 Americauna roosters, 1 Bantam rooster, one peacock, and 3 Cornish Rocks that are kept in their own pen, as the smaller birds were beating the crap out of them. I'll get more pics up later.

No eggs yet, but it won't be much longer. We got these guys at the end of Feb. The Bantam and the peacock have been here, but the hens are all newbies. Just because I like showing him off, here is George. Technically he's like a big chicken, right? Gosh I'd love to get a peahen and have baby pea-chicks, lol.

Do you lock him up somewhere at night?

He was a stray, if you can believe that. He showed up last August, took up with my rooster, and never left. He slept in the top of a giant pine tree for most of that time. A few weeks ago some loose dogs chased him while we were gone during the day, and he fell out of a tree into my neighbors fenced yard. They were home thankfully and chased the dogs away and called us. I carried him home and put him in the coop to make sure he was safe while he recovered. He is able to fly over the fence to get out if he wants. The lowest limb on his tree is about 10 ft up and he had no trouble flying that high to get to his roost at night. The chicken lot fence is around 7 or 8 and open on top. But he hasn't even tried to fly out, he likes it there. So now I lock him in the coop at night with the chickens.

ETA, I have just noticed the chicken at the top of the page covering the word horse in "horse forum". So funny!
